What is a luteinizing hormone (LH) levels test?
This test determines the concentration of luteinizing hormone (LH) in your blood. The pituitary gland, a tiny gland lying beneath the brain, produces LH. LH is essential for sexual development and functioning.
LH regulates the menstrual cycle in women. It also causes an egg to be released from the ovary. This is referred to as ovulation. LH levels rapidly increase immediately before ovulation.
In men, LH stimulates the testicles to produce testosterone, which is necessary for sperm production. LH levels in men often do not alter significantly.
