What are the most common causes of premature birth?
Premature births can occur unexpectedly and with no recognised cause. For medical reasons, providers may need to induce (start) labour early. Premature labour can also occur as a result of:
- Diabetes and infections are examples of chronic health issues.
- Drug or alcohol abuse.
- Multiple pregnancies, such as twins or triplets.
- Preeclampsia (pregnancy-related elevated blood pressure).
- They have uterine or cervix issues.
- There is insufficient time (less than 18 months) between pregnancies.
- During pregnancy, there may be vaginal bleeding or infections.
