How are diabetes-related foot conditions diagnosed?
A healthcare provider will do the following to diagnose diabetes-related foot conditions:
- Inquire about your symptoms and how effectively you manage your blood glucose levels.
- Check your toes, feet and legs.
- Check for numbness by touching your toes, foot and legs with various tools.
If a diabetic ulcer or blister is found, the healthcare provider will most likely:
- Look for signs of infection such redness, swelling, warmth, discoloration, or discharge.
- Order imaging tests that go deeper than the skin, such as an X-ray or an MRI.
- To test for infection, get a sample of the skin or discharge.
