How are diabetes-related foot conditions diagnosed?

A healthcare provider will do the following to diagnose diabetes-related foot conditions:

  • Inquire about your symptoms and how effectively you manage your blood glucose levels.
  • Check your toes, feet and legs.
  • Check for numbness by touching your toes, foot and legs with various tools.

If a diabetic ulcer or blister is found, the healthcare provider will most likely:

  • Look for signs of infection such redness, swelling, warmth, discoloration, or discharge.
  • Order imaging tests that go deeper than the skin, such as an X-ray or an MRI.
  • To test for infection, get a sample of the skin or discharge.
