Premature births can occur unexpectedly and with no recognised cause. For medical reasons, providers may need to induce (start) labour early. Premature labour can also occur as a result of:

• Diabetes and infections are examples of chronic health issues.
• Drug or alcohol abuse.
• Multiple pregnancies, such as twins or triplets.
• Preeclampsia (pregnancy-related elevated blood pressure).
• They have uterine or cervix issues.
• There is insufficient time (less than 18 months) between pregnancies.
• During pregnancy, there may be vaginal bleeding or infections.
