What are the risks of a dilation and curettage (D&C)?

What are the risks of a dilation and curettage (D&C)?

A D&C is a routine, safe procedure. However, like with any surgery, there are potential dangers. D&C dangers include:

  • Uterine perforation (a small rip in your uterus) can occur if the curette point penetrates through your uterine wall.
  • Infection of the uterus.
  • Bleeding in the uterus.

If you have a D&C following a miscarriage, you may acquire Asherman’s syndrome in rare situations. This problem develops when adhesions, or scar tissue bands, form in your uterus.

Scar tissue forms between the uterine walls in Asherman’s syndrome. The walls then adhere to one another. This disorder can lead to infertility and alter your menstrual cycle. However, most adhesions can be treated surgically.
