What causes a chemical pregnancy?
During a chemical pregnancy, the embryo releases hCG, a hormone required for growth. It’s also the hormone that pregnancy tests look for to determine whether or not you’re pregnant. When an embryo ceases developing, it stops producing hCG.
Nobody knows why an embryo ceases to develop during a chemical pregnancy. The embryo most likely stops developing due to a defect with its genetic makeup, or DNA. An embryo may fail to take hold, or implant, in the uterine lining in the manner required for growth. As a result, your hCG levels fall and pregnancy tests are negative.
How is a chemical pregnancy diagnosed?
will examine your medical history to determine when you last got your period. A pregnancy test will inform your doctor if you have had a chemical pregnancy.
