What is a hysterectomy?

What is a hysterectomy?

The surgical removal of the uterus and, most likely, the cervix is known as a hysterectomy. A hysterectomy may involve the removal of nearby organs and tissues, including the ovaries and fallopian tubes, depending on the purpose for the operation.

What are the different kinds of hysterectomy?

Total hysterectomy:

keeping your ovaries alone while removing your uterus and cervix.

Supracervical hysterectomy:

leaving your cervix in place and only removing the top portion of your uterus.

Total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy:

Removing your ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and fallopian tubes (salpingectomy).

Radical hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy:

uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, ovaries, upper region of your vagina, and some surrounding tissue and lymph nodes will be removed.
