What is a molar pregnancy?

What is a molar pregnancy?

A molar pregnancy happens when an egg and sperm combine wrong during fertilisation, resulting in the formation of a noncancerous tumour. The tumour resembles a cluster of grapes, with tiny water-filled sacs.

Some women suffer miscarriages. If this does not occur, the pregnancy must be removed surgically. Molar pregnancies can lead to catastrophic consequences if left addressed.

Molar pregnancies are a form of trophoblastic illness that occurs during pregnancy. Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is a collection of disorders that cause uterine tumours to form. Hydatidiform moles are another name for molar pregnancies.

What are the types of molar pregnancies?

Molar pregnancies fall into two categories: complete and partial.

Complete molar pregnancy:

No embryo develops in full molar pregnancies. When a sperm fertilises an unfertilized egg, it occurs. The egg is empty, thus the embryo is unable to develop. Although the placental tissue is aberrant and contains fluid-filled cysts (or tumours), it continues to grow.

Partial molar pregnancy:

When two sperm fertilise just one egg, a partial molar pregnancy develops along with a malformed placenta. The developing embryo in these circumstances possesses an additional set of chromosomes. Although it might begin to develop, the embryo seldom survives.
