What is an AMH test?

AMH testing determines the level of anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) in your blood. AMH is produced by both males (those assigned male at birth) and women (people assigned female at birth), however the test is most commonly used in women — primarily to offer a snapshot of a woman’s reproductive health.

What is anti-mullerian hormone (AMH)?

AMH is important in the development of a baby’s sex organs while in the womb. Male newborns have higher AMH levels, which prevents them from forming female reproductive organs. Female newborns require only a little quantity of AMH to develop.

AMH levels are proportional to the amount of eggs or ovarian reserve:

  • More eggs and a larger ovarian reserve are associated with greater AMH levels.
  • Lower AMH levels indicate fewer eggs and a diminished ovarian reserve.
