What is an ovarian endometrioma?

What is an ovarian endometrioma?

An ovarian endometrioma is a cyst filled with the same fluid seen in the uterine lining (endometrium). The fluid inside an ovarian endometrioma, sometimes known as “chocolate cysts,” resembles chocolate syrup.

Ovarian endometriomas, on the other hand, form in your ovaries rather than your uterus. An ovarian endometrioma is a symptom of endometriosis, a disorder in which endometrial-like tissue takes hold outside of the uterus.

How common are ovarian endometriomas?

Endometriosis affects about 10% of menstruating women, while ovarian endometriomas are estimated to affect 17 to 44% of those with endometriosis.
