What is dilation and curettage (D&C?)
A D&C is a minor surgical operation used to remove uterine tissue. This procedure is performed in a surgery center or by a gynaecologist or obstetrician’s office. Because it is usually an outpatient operation, you can return home the same day.
A D&C is named after:
Cervical dilation: Your provider dilates, or opens, your cervix. The opening of your uterus where it meets the top of your vagina is known as the cervix. Normally, your cervix dilates only during childbirth.
Curette: This tiny instrument is used by the provider to scrape your uterine wall and remove tissue.
Does a dilation and curettage (D&C) hurt?
You may get cramps that are comparable to menstruation cramps. The cramping can be relieved with over the-counter pain relievers.
