What is the process of in vitro gametogenesis?
IVG refers to the process of producing gametes outside of the body. IVG uses either 46XX or 46XY somatic cells in the lab to create an oocyte or sperm cell, which is then fertilized with gametes of the opposite biologic sex to create an embryo.
What processes are involved in gametogenesis?
A germ cell goes through meiosis during gametogenesis to produce haploid cells that grow straight into gametes. As a result, in animals, meiosis is an essential stage of gametogenesis. Meiosis and gametogenesis are separated in plants, some fungi, and some algae.
Is in vitro gametogenesis possible?
This is theoretically possible, if both male and female gametes are produced from a single individual. These gametes could be combined in vitro, using IVF technologies. Females with a functional uterus could carry the child themselves, while others could use a surrogate.
